Research Interests

Steve's dissertation involves the kappa opioid receptor system in neuropathic pain. It is understood that chronic neuropathic pain triggers anxiety and depression in patients. Interestingly, this phenomenon is nearly identical to the symptoms exhibited in drug abuse and withdrawal. Using the mouse model, Steve has found the kappa opioid receptor is highly activated in regions of the brain that are crucial for mediating reward, emotion, and mood; and pharmacological inhibition of this receptor’s activity in mice with neuropathic pain would attenuate their anxiety and depressive-like behaviors. Steve’s goal is to find the mechanism by which kappa opioid receptor activation leads to these negative affective disorders.
